The Lawyer Examines Skadden’s Equity Changes and Shifts in IP Partner Hiring
The Lawyer has published an article by Richard Simmons exploring Skadden’s move to introduce a non-equity stage to its partnership - a structural change designed to promote lawyers earlier and strengthen retention. The piece situates the decision within broader trends among top US firms, several of which have adopted similar tiered models to balance talent development and profitability.
Alongside this, the article highlights data from Macrae’s latest analysis showing that intellectual property and international arbitration remain among the fastest-growing areas for partner movement. Between 2020 and 2024, IP accounted for 17% of partner moves, rising to 23% so far this year - a sign of continued investment in revenue-generating, high-demand practices.
