Legal Job Growth Continues for Fifth Consecutive Month

The US legal sector added 600 jobs in July, marking five straight months of employment growth, according to new figures from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. With nearly 1.2 million legal jobs now reported, the market has shown unexpected resilience amid broader uncertainty.

Macrae Partner Rachel Nonaka, based in Washington, D.C., spoke with Tracey Read at Law360 about the strong hiring activity reflected in the data. “We were expecting a slowdown after the first-quarter crush of government officials transitioning in Washington, D.C.,” she said. “We haven’t seen that slowdown from the recruiting side, so the jobs report is consistent with our own practice.”

Rachel noted that law firms continue to actively hire across levels - from summer associates through to partners - and that demand remains particularly high in areas with global implications, such as corporate, national security, cybersecurity, and privacy.

With the fall recruiting season approaching, Rachel added: “I’m hopeful that we’ll see six months of growth [next month], with additional new jobs coming this fall.”
